It’s an old joke: a tourist asks, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” and the New Yorker answers, “Practice, practice, practice.”

Practicing is second nature to cellist Yvonne Caruthers, who moved to Grand Marais in February 2015, inspired by her visits to Cook County during vacations and by the region’s reputation as a center for artists. Caruthers will give a talk at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts, The Art of the Practice: The Practice of Art at 7 p.m. Nov. 13.

Caruthers was a member of the National Symphony Orchestra from 1978-2014, performing at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. under music directors Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonard Slatkin, and Christoph Eschenbach. During her years in Washington, Caruthers also lectured widely on musical topics, and she taught dozens of aspiring musicians with a focus on teaching how to practice as well as what to practice.

Most recently, Caruthers performed In Search of the Perfect G-String, this summer, which was a dramatization of her life as a professional cellist, at Gunflint Lodge and the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. She has also performed in several locations around Grand Marais as part of “First Friday” celebrations and multiple festivals.

Caruthers will include several musical examples in her program, using them to illustrate The Art of Practice: the Practice of Art. Her talk is tailored for students and practitioners of performing, visual, and literary arts. This event is a Grand Marais Arts Partners collaboration, cohosted by The Grand Marais Arts Colony and the North Shore Music Association. For more information all (218) 387-2737.
