The Grand Marais Art Colony will offer two special classes featuring artists in-residence Marty Harris and Mary Bergs. Local residents and visitors are invited to stop by to experience their work.
Make a Mark will be presented by Marty Harris on March 21 from 9 a.m. to noon. Join Harris for a morning of mark making and explore alternative approaches to rendering a subject, be it landscape, still life, or portrait. Working with natural and found materials, Harris will teach participants to build their own brushes, pens, stamps, and stencils, and generate pages of unique marks and patterns. Inspired primarily by postcards and other landscape references, participants will use their pages of marks to build collaged imagery. Harris will guide participants to consider marks as description, marks as characters, and marks as expression.
A week later, Mary Bergs will instruct participants in the art of quilting. She will demonstrate how to turn discarded art pieces into new creations from 1 to 4 p.m. March 28. “We know you have art scraps hanging around, stuffed into a shoe box, a folder, or on the counter of your studio,” she said. “Bring them in and work with me to create a collaged quilt block using a variety of design elements and stitching.” The idea for this project is modeled after traditional quilting bees in which women brought fabric scraps and assembled them into quilts and is designed for ages 12 to adult.
