Art Colony awarded state grant

The Grand Marais Art Colony has been awarded a $32,534 Minnesota State Arts Board grant to host the Grand Marais Arts Festival, July 14 – 15, 2012. One of only 16 grantees for the award, they are the only festival funded in the Northeast region of the state.

“This funding allows us to host the Grand Marais Arts Festival,” said Amy Demmer, executive director of the Art Colony. “A major portion of the event budget goes to marketing the festival outside of the county. Last year, with the support of this funding, we were able to increase visitation from 3,000 visitors in 2010 to 10,000 visitors in 2011.”

In addition to the funding, the Art Colony announced it will again be hosting an Arts Festival question-and-answer session for emerging and established artists interested in applying to the festival. “With the support of this grant, we have been able to expand our services to artists for this festival,” said Kjersti Vick, event coordinator for the Art Colony. “This session allows people to find out more about the application process as well as the support available for artists to participate.” The Q&A session will be held at the Art Colony on Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m.
