You see artists standing at their easels or drawing boards along roads, rivers, hiking trails, and beaches. Artists stop to be inspired by flowers in your garden. Artists stand in fields of poppies, birch groves, and stands of maples. Surrounded by water, rocks, sky, sunrise, sunset, and moonrise, they’re part of the landscape of Cook County. And it’s their art that is on exhibit at the Grand Marais Art Colony Member Show for nine glorious days at the end of this month.

The Grand Marais Art Colony Member Show opens on Saturday, September 26 and runs through Sunday, October 4. Featuring art created by past and present Art Colony members, instructors and students, this year’s show promises to please the senses and illustrate the history of art at the Grand Marais Art Colony. Year-round art instructors, who are themselves artists, and artists-turned-students inhabit cabins, hotel and motel rooms, condos and locales throughout Cook County to rest, eat, and be inspired by all nature has to offer. Artists are known for pouring their creative energy into works of art that express what they see, hear, feel, smell and taste. Paintings, drawings, prints, pottery, sculpture, mixed media and more reflect the experience of the seasons in this beautiful place on earth. The Member Show exhibits the results of this intoxicating creative energy that’s “in the air” in Cook County.

“It’s wonderful to be here, taking time to soak up the energy of the lake and focus on making art. I feel like I escaped from the treadmill of my life!” an artist exclaimed in her Studio Immersion Class with master instructor Hazel Belvo.

Whether you are an artist, an art appreciator, a supporter of the arts, a community member, or all of the above, you are invited to come to the Grand Marais Art Colony Member Show to feed your senses. The chance to be inspired by art of the past and present is yours this fall.

The Grand Marais Art Colony annual meeting and brunch opens the Member Show on Saturday, September 26, starting at 10:00 a.m. with the annual meeting, followed by a public brunch at 11:00 a.m.

Currently, the organization is accepting submissions for the 2009 Member Show. Artists are invited to submit up to two art pieces, one of which must be for sale. All work must be submitted by Friday, Sept 25, 2009 at 2 PM to the Grand Marais Art Colony.

In addition to members’ work, the Art Colony is also inviting Art Colony related pieces from private collections to showcase its history. If you have a piece of art that was created by an Art Colony founder, instructor, student, member, Cook County resident, etc., please submit it to the show. It does not have to be for sale.

Let the art inspire you, as the scenery has inspired the artists, and remember, you live in an incredibly beautiful place!
