Arrest for arson made in Grand Portage house fire





Grand Portage and Hovland fire departments were called to a house fire in Grand Portage on Tuesday. Fire fighters were on the scene for several hours. The structure was considered a total loss.

Grand Portage and Hovland fire departments were called to a house fire in Grand Portage on Tuesday. Fire fighters were on the scene for several hours. The structure was considered a total loss.

Grand Portage and Hovland fire departments, along with two Cook County sheriff ’s deputies, responded to a structure fire on Townsite Road in Grand Portage at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, October 3, which destroyed a home. The Minnesota state fire marshal also attended the scene and is completing the arson investigation.

Lori Jean Dahmen, 46, of Grand Portage was arrested and charged with arson. Dahmen appeared in State District Court on Wednesday, October 4 and was arraigned on a first-degree arson charge. Sixth District Judge Michael Cuzzo set her bail at $15,000.

Dahmen, who was reportedly intoxicated, told authorities she used a cigarette lighter to set fire to a bed. She said she was trying to destroy a bad spirit. Dahmen is in Cook County jail and will be back in court October 23.
