Preventing child abuse and neglect is a universal societal concern. It also has never had more meaning than now during the pandemic when programs like home visiting and parent support groups are not able to meet. The impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on daily life for parents is extraordinary.
Many parents may now find themselves with a lack of childcare, school closures, limited employment opportunities, and social isolation. Compounded with uncertainty, anxiety, fear, and frustration, the financial and emotional stress brought by the COVID-19 pandemic could likely create a dangerous environment for some children.
Every April, the Y helps increase public awareness to help prevent child abuse and neglect. This month we will be sharing several activities and information on our website and Facebook page to strengthen parenting skills, connect parents with local and statewide resources, and increase knowledge about child development. We also provide short-term child care relief to primary caregivers with drop-in childcare at the Early Learning Center or schoolage care during times that schools are closed.
