Another perspective from the Cook County Citizen Budget Advisory Committee

As I see it

I read the opinion piece from some of the other members of the Cook County Citizen Budget Advisory Committee and thought I would share a different perspective. I am a member of this committee. As we all are aware each of us presents our opinions, but not all opinions reflect fact. Opinions are shaped by our filters.

For example in the editorial it is stated that resolution of disagreement or consensus was not-existent. In fact, several items were discussed and committee members were asked if there was consensus or if anyone disagreed.

I really appreciate the different views on this committee. One thing I am aware of is that each of us brings our own perspectives shaped by a variety of factors. When listening to other people’s viewpoints it is important to understand that one person’s viewpoint is not more right or wrong; it is just a way to make sense of things from their perspective.

I also know that when a decision is made with which I might not agree, that does not mean that the process or person is at fault even if I feel disappointed.

The county staff was very helpful in helping this committee understand its reasons for the decisions and budget requests. We had many departments come and talk with us to help us understand what issues they faced and why they made the requests that they did. I appreciated the transparency of this process and look forward to working with all the citizens on this board and staff again next year.
