Another dog owner in Grand Marais witnessed their pet being attacked by a wolf on November 1, 2014. Julie Eliasen of Grand Marais came home to her house on Eliasen Mill Road at noon to let her 15-yearold pit bull mix dog Copper outside for a little while. When she opened the door to let Copper out, she saw a wolf standing about three feet away from her deck.
Eliasen said she was stunned. She had never seen a wolf in daylight before.
“I knew what was going to happen,” said Eliasen in a phone conversation a few days later. “I knew she would chase it.”
Before Eliasen could stop the dog, she took off running, barking at the wolf. Eliasen ran after them and heard a yelp and saw the wolf carrying off her 60-pound dog. “I chased after screaming her name and yelling for help,” said Eliasen who didn’t want her dog dragged into the woods to die.
Thankfully, Eliasen said, at the end of the road the wolf stopped and let Copper go. The dog suffered puncture wounds to the side of her neck, chest and ear.
Eliasen said she tried doctoring the wounds herself but they became infected. The News-Herald caught up with just after she had returned home from the veterinarian. “It got infected really fast,” she said, noting that Copper will likely be okay, but said she was really “out of sorts” for a few days.
And, Eliasen said, “She won’t be off her leash at all anymore.”
Eliasen said the wolf was a large gray and white animal. “It looked beautiful and healthy. I was kind of reluctant to call law enforcement; it was just doing what wolves do. But I think that people should know to be careful with their dogs.”
