Jeff Eliasen, Grand Marais, won $500 at the Cook County Snowmobile Club-Ridge Riders annual Trout Derby for his lake trout weighing 6.96 pounds. Jeff must have had a special bait or was fishing a “honey hole” because he also caught the sixth largest fish weighed in during the contest.

The annual trout derby was held on Gunflint Lake on Saturday, March 6 on a beautiful day to be on the ice, said Butch Schulte, adding it was warm enough to (almost) not wear your jacket.

Funds raised from the derby are used to raise funds for trail maintenance and grooming equipment.

All told, there were 129 entrants in the fishing contest.

Grayson Goodman placed second with his 3.73- pound catch. Grayson won a Clam icehouse.
