On July 15 celebrate north woods style at the Gunflint Trail Canoe Races at the Gunflint Lodge waterfront beginning at 4 p.m.

Everyone is invited to participate in the biggest Trail event of the season. Racers can compete in many of the 16 races scheduled during the evening and others can cheer on the contenders. All proceeds go to support the Gunflint Trail Fire Department.

Grand prize for the $5 raffle will be a Current Designs Kestrel 140 Kayak worth $2,100. The kayak will be on display at Trail Center. Tickets are available at there and at other resorts and from salespersons.

Other activities include many items to be raffled at $2 a ticket; silent auction; numerous kids’ and adult events; and lots of food including the famous Canoe Race sloppy joes.

Races start at 6 p.m. with the long distance race followed by many age and gender competitions. The last race and highlight of the evening is “gunnel pumping” where solo canoeists balance on the gunnels and try to pump to victory.

All proceeds go to the fire department that keeps those along the Trail safe and secure with fire, emergency and rescue services. Current needs are replacing the second 40-yearold fire truck, updating ambulance needs and constant maintenance on current equipment and the three fire stations.

The races are hosted by the Gunflint – Seagull – Saganaga Property Owners Associations. Chris Steele of Seagull Lake is this year’s race chair.
