The annual book sale sponsored by Library Friends of Cook County will be held Thursday, Aug. 4 through Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Community Center. Thursday night is for Library Friends members only between 5 and 7 p.m. Memberships will be sold at the center one hour prior to the sale on Thursday afternoon. The hours on Friday are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday hours are 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., and books and materials will be discounted for $3 per bag.
The Library Friends of Cook County is an all-volunteer, nonprofit service organization which conducts the sale each year to raise funds in support of the library mission for all of the libraries, public and school, in Cook County. In addition to contributing funds for books, materials and programming, the Library Friends group is making a contribution in support of the new construction of the library which is to be completed by the end of 2011.
The success of the sale depends on the donations throughout the year and the many volunteers who sort books and help with the sale. This sale will offer
books, DVDs, CDs, videotapes and other materials. This year, there is a large collection of LPs in a broad range of musical styles as well. Materials will be placed by categories of interest on tables.
More than income for the library, this sale helps continue our long tradition in the U.S. of sharing information, our history, scientific, recreation, political and hobby literature, and occasionally a rare edition long forgotten in someone’s home or office library. In an age of electronic connections and immediate information transmissions, it’s good to note both the volume of printed materials available in our area and the considerable public interest in obtaining these items.
