Annual Ely Blueberry Festival coming

Ely’s signature summer event, the Blueberry/Art Festival, is celebrating its 37th year July 28-30. Held in Ely’s beautiful Whiteside Park, this fest continues to be a favorite event that draws thousands of people to Ely each year. The festival opens at noon on Friday and runs until 7 p.m. Saturday’s hours are 10-6 and Sunday 10-4.

The Ely Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event.

Fest-goers can find unique handcrafted items or original works of art from more than 260 exceptional artists or craftsmen in this juried art show. And what would a fest be without spectacular food? Start your day with a blueberry pancake breakfast or a delicious breakfast sandwich and for lunch, try wood-fired pizza, pork chops on a stick, Taiwanese or Oriental cuisine, seafood including crab cakes and coconut shrimp and the always favorites: hamburgers, brats, piles of fries, cheese curds and BBQ.

And you simply cannot pass up dessert. Every year, the Ely Kiwanas serve up homemade blueberry pie by the slice. Try it a la mode – or why not buy a whole pie to enjoy at home? New this year is a booth selling mini chocolate chip cookies and chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches.

Don’t forget to enjoy an ice-cold beverage at the beer garden or fresh-squeezed lemonade, shaved Italian ice or an icy-cold Dorothy Molter root beer located throughout the fest grounds.

There will be three days of free live musical performances beginning Friday afternoon with Timmy Haus performing songs in a variety of genres from Paul Simon to Johnny Cash to Counting Crows and more. On Saturday, Bill Maxwell & Cowboy Angle Blue joins us for two performances singing Neil Young and Bob Dylan favorites to an enthusiastic crowd. And Sunday, we are pleased to announce two performances of “Remember When” by Pat & Donna Surface and the Boundary Water Boys.
