Anna L. (Everson) Speck

Anna L. (Everson) Speck, 96, of Grand Marais, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at the North Shore Care Center in Grand Marais.

Anna was born April 18, 1926, to Adolph and Celia (Johnson) Everson at the family home on Maple Hill, Grand Marais, Minnesota. She fondly told memories of living on the farm where she helped take care of the animals and siblings. The oldest daughter of nine children, Anna, was a very hard worker her entire life. She held various jobs, including working at the veneer plant in the sixties until it burned down. After that, Anna worked many years at the North Shore Hospital in the laundry and later in the Dietary Department, where she eventually retired. After retiring from the North Shore Hospital, she cleaned the North Shore Laundromat, as well as cleaned for the U.S. Forest Service in the summer months. She then retired at the age of 85.

Anna was a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion Post 413, and Bethlehem Lutheran Church. The most important thing to Anna was being with and caring for her grandchildren, canning, baking, and cooking for her family. She was always the highlight of every get-together and loved singing, dancing, and playing many musical instruments.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Celia; infant sister Ruth; her husband Clarence, life partner Donald Thompson; sisters Dorothy, Gladys, and Helen, brothers Oscar, Lloyd, Gerald, and Harry; and great-grandson Jeremy Johnson.

Anna will be deeply missed by her sons Roger (Cherie) Speck, Lloyd (Gail) Speck, and Dale (Betty) Speck; brother Wally (Sandra) Everson; nine grandchildren, Shelly (Dallas) Starkey, Brian Speck, Julianne (Brooke) Danner, Julie (Scott) Johnson, Jennifer (Ben) Speck, Collette (Tom) Sizer, Nichole DeRosier, Kristi (Alan) Perales and Stephanie Speck; twenty-one great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service and celebration of Anna’s life will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 11 AM on Saturday April 22, 2023.
