Not many people get to compete in a track meet named after their grandfather, but Anna Hay did just that.
The Bethel University Royals hosted the Gene Glader Classic on their indoor track on February 18th, with Anna, a freshman, taking second place in the mile with a time of 5:42.27. Anna lost the race to teammate Esther Nelson, who just beat Anna to the finish line by one-tenth of a second.
The Royals won seven events and won the team title with 181 points.
Anna, a strong runner for Cook County I.S.D. 166, is a freshman at Bethel competing in cross country and track and field. Her grandfather Dr. Gene Glader coached at Bethel from 1959-81. He started the cross country and track programs at Bethel in 1961. Glader was the Head Cross Country Coach from 1961-80 and the Head Track & Field Coach from 1961-77. He led the team to a be Gopher Badger Conference Champions in 1962 and Tri- State Conference Track Champions in 1977. Dr. Gene Glader also served as Men’s Athletic Director from 1965-76.
Gene was recovering from surgery and was not able to attend the meet, but his wife was there with several family members and friends.
Following his retirement from teaching and coaching Gene and his wife moved to Grand Marais where they owned Cascade Lodge and Bluewater Café from 1981 to 2004, when they sold the lodge, and in 2005 they sold Blue Water Café. After that Gene focused on writing two books of the history about Grand Marais and keeping up with his grandchildren’s exploits.
