The inaugural Grand Portage Lodge & Casino Fishing tournament didn’t draw large numbers, but overall, it was successful.

“It had a modest turnout,” said GPLC Marketing Director Todd Ford. “The weather wasn’t particularly cooperative: cool, windy, rainy and the lake had a high chop.

“But, Ford added, “The anglers who participated said they enjoyed it and will come back again.”

The three-day event was held at the end of September. Participants fished for Lake Trout and Salmon (King and Coho) on Lake Superior. Contestants vied for cash prizes in the three categories with first winning $1,250, second $750 and third $500. A total of $5,000 was paid out.

When contestants weren’t on the big lake fishing, they were enjoying the festivities at the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino.

“We had a fun dance on Saturday night (Flywheel from Twin Cities). So, it was a good start, and we will indeed do this again next year, probably earlier in the season in hopes for better weather,” said Ford.
