On June 7, 2009 Victor “Vic” Carl Torrel, 20, of Virginia, Minnesota was found deceased in Cook County after being missing overnight.
Cook County Law Enforcement issued a page at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, requesting that the Cook County Sheriff Response Unit (SRU) assist with a search for a missing fisherman. Torrel’s friends were camping with him at the small camping area on the Cascade River on Bally Creek Road. They were concerned that Torrel had set out wearing only jeans and a sweatshirt much earlier to go fishing and had not returned as expected. They said he planned to follow the Cascade River north.
TheCook County Sheriff ‘s Office, Cook County Sheriff ‘s Response Unit, and volunteer civilians conducted a search, hoping that Torrel would be found safe and sound. That was not the case. After an allnight search, Torrel’s body was found by deputy Nick Hacker at approximately 5:30 a.m. on June 7.
The incident and cause of death are still under investigation by the Cook County Sheriff ‘s Office. No criminal conduct is suspected at this time, and the cause of death is believed to be an accidental drowning.
