UW-Stout senior Andy Smith of Grand Marais was named to the 2011 PING All-Central Region golf team.
Smith was UW-Stout’s No. 1 player throughout the 2010-11 season and is making his third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships. He has been one of the Blue Devils’ steadiest performers throughout his career. With the exception of one slip-up this year to open the spring season, Smith has been in the top 15 in the other nine meets, taking medalist honor twice and making five top five finishes.
This season heading into the national tournament, Smith was averaging 74.8 strokes per round and last year averaged 75.3. After averaging 81.2 as a freshman,
Smith found his groove during his sophomore season, averaging 77.5. For his career, Smith is averaging 76.4. Smith has played more varsity rounds (67) than any other UW-Stout player since the university returned men’s golf to its sports module beginning with the 2006-07 season.
The PING all-region teams are selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The teams were announced at the annual awards banquet held at the national tournament. The tournament was held at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C., May 10-13.
Andy is the son of Rory and Katie Smith of Grand Marais, and is a 2007 CCHS grad.
