Two fine young Cook County baseball players, Owen Anderson and Frankie Miller, were selected to play in the American Legion All-Star game held August 6 in Hibbing at the Al Nyberg Field.
“We played on the South team,” said Anderson, noting that he hit the ball hard in his two at bats, but didn’t collect a hit in the game.
Miller was 1-for-2 at the plate with a single.
“My first at bat I grounded out to the shortstop. He kind of robbed me. He made a great play on the ball, but I guess that’s what happens in All-Star games,” Miller said.
“I played center field and left field. Frankie played third base,” said Anderson.
The South lost to the North squad 6-0.
“They had a great pitcher,” said Miller.
All in all, said Anderson, “It was a lot of fun, a great experience.”
The two multiple sport athletes recently attended a prospect camp for baseball players at the University of Minnesota- Duluth (UMD) campus where coaches were on hand watching the kids play. Both Anderson and Miller, who will be juniors this year at Cook County High School, hope to play baseball in college.
“Definitely, that’s what I hope to do,” said Owen.
“I think that’s the way it’s going for me. I also play hockey and football, but I think baseball will be my sport in college,” said Frankie.
But for now, both Miller and Anderson have put their bats and gloves away and are concentrating on football.
“We should have a better football team this year than last year,” said Miller.
