Anders Zimmer,
14, of Grand Marais has been named to the U.S. Junior National Alpine Team after qualifying in Marquette, Michigan this past week, where he competed against the best 90 racers from 10 other states. While in Michigan Anders competed in the slalom, giant slalom and downhill, earning enough points to make the team.

The excitement came for Anders with a medal for the downhill race portion of the event where Anders put down three incredible runs that resulted in a fourth, eighth, and ninth place finish for the three races.

Anders is now off to Vail, Colorado to race in the Junior Olympics from March 1 – 13. He will be racing in all four disciplines (slalom, giant slalom, super G, and downhill). Anders is a favorite to place very high in the super G and the downhill where racers hit speeds around 75 mph.

While in Vail, Anders will be racing with the best 80 racers in the United States. Four young racers from the Junior Olympics will be sent to Whistler, British Colombia (where the Olympics are currently being held) to represent Team USA in the Whistler Cup (North American Games).
