Amy M. McMillan, former resident of Grand Marais and associate professor of biology at Buffalo State College, will receive the President’s Award for Excellence in academic advisement during the 23rd annual Academic Convocation ceremony Sept. 16 in Rockwell Hall Auditorium.
McMillan has served as the chair of the Biology Advisement Committee since 2004. In that role, she has developed a number of initiatives that have improved the quality of advisement and participation in advisement within the department.
Under McMillan’s leadership, the committee created a department advisement plan and a document outlining expectations for students and advisers. As a result of the plan, the number of students participating in advisement more than doubled from 2007 to 2009.
McMillan provides opportunities for colleagues to share best-practice information regarding advisement. She mentors new faculty on the importance of advisement, and collects and analyzes data on student participation in advisement.
In addition to her full-time teaching duties, McMillan averages 35 undergraduate advisees each semester, the most in the department. McMillan has also been very active in the biology graduate program as a major adviser and theses committee member.
