Amish Midwife to appear at library

Kim Woodward Osterholzer, aka the Amish Midwife, is scheduled to appear at the Grand Marais Public Library on Wednesday, July 24, at 6 p.m. Osterholzer plans to follow up on her very popular event held last summer with the presentation of her two new books Homebirth: safe & sacred, and Nourish and thrive: happy healthy childbearing.

Homebirth describes American homebirth and homebirth midwifery with an in-depth look at statistics, training, and the quality of care homebirth midwives are able to provide their clients. The book also examines national maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity rates—sadly, the worst in the developed world—and how they appear to relate to the philosophy and policies of our current medical system.

Nourish is a discussion of how to achieve and maintain the level of health that positions women and their babies to enjoy normal, low-risk pregnancies, labors, births, postpartum recoveries, and seasons of new parenting— pregnancies, labors, births postpartums, and parentings well-suited to home, if home is so desired.

A complementary event is also planned for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, at the Cook County Community Center 4-H Log Building for a screening of the movie Why not home?

Kim Woodard Osterholzer, CPM, RM is a homebirth midwife of sixteen years with an active practice in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She has attended the births of nearly 600 little ones, including those of her grandbabies. She’s founder and proprietor of both Birth at Home Midwifery Services and Born For This: Giving Birth to a Happy, Healthy Family.

Osterholzer is the author of A Midwife in Amish Country, Celebrating God’s Gift of Life; Nourish + Thrive: Happy, Healthy Childbearing; One Little Life at a Time: Recommendations + Record Keeping for Aspiring Homebirth Midwives; and Homebirth: Safe & Sacred. Kim lives with her husband Steven, and together they revel in a blended family of five children, two children-in-law, and—so far—three grandchildren. The author plans to have copies of her books available for purchase at the event.
