The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Minnesota Chapter is set to host a free two-part special educational program for northern Minnesota residents newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Education and support at this key stage empowers people with PD to make the best choices possible for their treatment moving forward. The APDA Parkinson’s Good Start Program is taking place on Wednesday, October 12, and Wednesday, October 19, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Individuals are encouraged to participate on both dates to benefit from the entire program. There is no cost to attend, but pre-registration is required.
The APDA Parkinson’s Good Start Program, offered by APDA Minnesota in partnership with Essentia Health, is a two-week educational series that will help attendees learn more about:
What Parkinson’s disease is
Treatment options for Parkinson’s disease
The healthcare team for Parkinson’s disease management
The role of rehabilitation and exercise in Parkinson’s disease
Medication management for optimum functioning
Positive coping strategies in living with Parkinson’s disease
Supportive community resources for people with Parkinson’s disease, in northern Minnesota, statewide, and across the country
“A diagnosis of Parkinson’s can be overwhelming” states Anushka Shiell, APDA Information & Referral Coordinator. She continues “Many people are confused, scared, and don’t know where to begin. APDA is here for them, to help them learn more about their disease and the steps they can take to empower themselves and live their best lives.”
This free program is ideal for people who are newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (between 0-3 years post-diagnosis), and their family members. Any members of the community who are interested in learning about PD are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided.
Classes will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1710 E. Superior Street, Duluth, MN 55812.
