American Legion will be missed

Somehow, writing this has the feel of an obituary. As a senior citizen and former military veteran I mourn the pending loss of the American Legion recently known as Grandma Ray’s.

I will miss Tuesday night trivia, a multi-generational gathering. I will miss Friday’s fried chicken dinners along with music by the Portage Band. I will miss gathering with friends to view sporting events on large multi TV screens. I will miss the music and bingo during Fisherman’s Picnic.

Of course, I will miss our musical community most of all. We have so much local talent and so few outlets. The Legion offered good acoustics, a dance floor and a convenient location for both tourists and locals. It was easy to park or walk, the musicians were paid and city taxes were remitted.

I believe we are losing a valuable community resource open to all. Then again, I’m not a teenager. Back then, I spent my time at the YMCA/YWCA, scouts and school sport programs.
