The Cook County Senior Legion Vikings were beaten soundly by two top American Legion baseball teams last Saturday, June 22 in Ely at the DQ tournament.

First up was a game against Minnetonka. With the score tied fiveall in the bottom of the fourth, ‘Tonka’s Will Durense singled in a run to give the Skippers the lead. They would add two more runs in that inning and go on to win 13-5.

Bryce Smith got the win for the Skippers. He pitched three innings, allowing one run while giving up two hits and striking out three.

Timmy Perfetto, Silver Bay, took the loss for Cook County Senior Legion. Perfetto gave up seven runs on 10 hits over four innings.

Cook County Senior Legion hitters chased Minnetonka’s starting pitcher Joey Johnson from the mound. Johnson lasted three innings while giving up four runs on three hits and striking out two.

Minnetonka ended with 15 hits. Crawford led his team with four hits in five at-bats.

Joe Deschampe, Riley Tarver, Tristen Bockovich, Andrew Miller and Vaughn Swindlehurst each got a hit for Cook County Senior Legion.

With two outs in the top of the fourth Cook County Senior Legion took a 5-4 lead when Tristen Bockovich drove in Andrew Miller with a single. Unfortunately, Cook County’s lead was brief, but it did show that the kids from the North Shore could play competitively with the kids from the big city.

The games were held to six innings in the DQ showcase held at Ely.

Cook County falls to Hawley

The Cook County Senior Legion baseball team ran into a hot pitcher in Hawley’s Cade Carley last Saturday.

Over five innings Carley gave up one hit while striking out eight batters. Carley didn’t allow a run and the Vikings fell 8-0.

Tristen Bockovich took the loss for the Vikings. Tristen struck out two, walked four, and gave up nine hits and eight runs in four and a third innings pitched.

Andrew Miller’s double in the first inning was the lone bright spot for the Cook County hitters.

The Vikings committed four errors to Hawley’s one. Bockovich threw 92 pitches, 50 for strikes. Carley threw 83 pitches, 53 for strikes.

Hawley scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings to bust the game wide open.

So far this season the Cook County Senior Legion baseball team has a 10-6 win over Eveleth on June 12, a 10-3 loss and 8-7 loss to Proctor in a doubleheader played June 15. With several more games on the road, the Cook County Senior Legion squad will play at home on July 2 against International Falls at Arleigh Jorgenson field. The game will start at noon.
