With the changes coming to the building on First Avenue in Grand Marais that houses American Legion Post 413, the Legion “house committee”—the subcommittee that has overseen operations at the lounge for three decades—took a moment at a recent meeting to express appreciation to Terry Breithaupt and his wife Janet.
Breithaupt, a retired Marine Lieutenant Commander and a Legion member, is the current lounge manager. He and 10-year Legion employee Liz Hall are leasing the building and opening under a new name sometime this year.
On January 26, the house committee recognized Breithaupt, for “all the time and effort he has put into managing the Legion bar and lounge.”
Post 413 Vice-Commander Bob Mattson presented Breithaupt with a plaque, thanking him for his service “to our country, veterans and Post 413.”
The house committee also expressed appreciation to Janet Breithaupt as well. Mattson presented her with a bouquet of flowers and said thank you for “all the afternoons and evenings she spent alone while her husband was at the Legion.”
When Breithaupt and Hall open the newly revamped restaurant, it will still serve as “Home of American Legion Post 413.”
The name of the restaurant is yet to be determined. Breithaupt and Hall are accepting suggestions in a contest that will run through the end of February. Drop off your suggestion for a name and you could win a certificate to the new establishment.
