Cook County baseball players wrapped up the high school season with honors and have hit the field running in the summer American Legion baseball season.
The Vikings baseball team was awarded an Academic All-State Silver Medal, which is based on the average grade point average of team members. “We are obviously most proud of this honor,” said Head Coach Arleigh Jorgenson.
Individual Vikings also received recognition. Junior pitcher and first-baseman Joe Borud was named first-team All- Polar League. Senior Colin Everson was invited to play for the south in the Section A and AA All- Star Game for seniors in Nashwauk.
Coach Jorgenson is happy to continue working with some of his Viking players in American Legion baseball. He said the team has played well this summer. He said, “We are young and fairly short-handed due to injuries first to Rory Bakke, then to Leo Johnson, and now to Thomas Anderson. Others have had conflicting summer schedules. But, we have played competitively throughout the summer, and have improved greatly as a team.
“The high school season featured lots of practice with all of our games squeezed into a three-week window, without much opportunity to practice between games.”
American Legion regular players are Colin Everson at shortstop, catcher and pitcher; Joe Borud at shortstop and pitcher; Thomas Anderson at third base and pitcher; Richie Furlong at catcher and left field; Frankie Miller at third base, pitcher, and catcher; Jaret Baker at first; Jack Wieben at second; Owen Anderson in center; Sean MacDonell in left field, third base, and pitching; Colton Furlong in left field, right field, and catcher; Bradley Wilson at third and left field; and Beckley Rumph in right field. Leading hitters are Joe Borud at over .700, and Colin Everson at .500.
The Legion team is tentatively scheduled to play its final regular season double header against Carlton at home on Saturday morning, July 20 beginning at 10 a.m. Playoffs will follow next week.
The Cook County team’s record going into the Carlton game is 2-8. A sweep would put Cook County ahead of Carlton in the final standings. Ely currently is on top, followed by Taconite (the Marble-based team), Brookston, Chisholm, Deer River, Carlton, and Cook County.
