The Cook County High School gym was filled with nervous presenters, excited seniors and proud parents and grandparents as 2011 High School Awards were presented. Awards and scholarships were presented for everything from safety patrol and student council recognition to major renewable scholarships.

Among the new scholarships for CCHS this year was the Daniel Patrick Riley Scholarship, presented by Sue Riley in honor of her husband who loved the North Shore.

The Cook County RidgeRiders Snowmobile Club introduced a new scholarship this year. Shelè Toftey presented the $250 scholarship to Cheyenne Sorlie, explaining that the RidgeRiders wanted to give something back to the community.

A very special new scholarship was created by 2004 CCHS grad Matthew Kangas, the Carpe Diem Award of $500. Kangas, now a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, said the award was given in memory of his friend and hockey buddy, Joe Cihlar. Kangas’s mother, Alicia Kangas, presented the award because the 1st Lieutenant was at Camp Pendleton. Alicia said Matt flies Cobra helicopters. The job, he told her, “is awesome!”

Matt told the Class of 2011 to remember that nothing worth having comes easy. He encouraged them to work hard to achieve their dreams and to remember they are the leaders of tomorrow.

Congratulations to all the students honored!

Judy Siegle of the Grand Marais Lioness Club said of all the opportunities the Lioness Club has to offer, “this is by far my favorite.” She added, “But I also hate it because we only have one scholarship to give and all of the applicants were wonderful.” Siegle said she was happy to present the $1,000 scholarship to Sebastian Schnobrich.
