Alton Berglund





 

 

Alton Berglund, 92, of Grand Marais, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2016 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

Alton was born Oct. 24, 1924 to Alfred and Signuld (Soderburg) Berglund in Grand Marais, where he was a lifelong resident. He grew up working on the family farm, something he continued doing through his life. Upon graduating from high school, Alton ran a milk route, hauled pulpwood, and raised cattle before being employed by Erie Mining for over 30 years. In 1951 he married Carol Rude in Grand Marais.

Alton served as a county commissioner for 12 years, beginning when he was 27 years old. He also served on the hospital board for 22 years, Arrowhead board, and the Soil and Water board for over 30 years.

Alton was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was honored by being named Cook County Senior Citizen of the Year in 2010.

When he wasn’t working or farming, Alton adored the time spent with family, especially his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Wallace and Palmer Berglund; and adopted daughter Anabelle Johnson.

Alton is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol; children Tamara (Dr. Kevin) Krause of Hibbing, Brian and Kevin (Sharon) of Grand Marais; grandchildren Collin, Bjorn (Jennifer), Brock (Rebecca), and Brittany; eight great-grandchildren and one on the way; brothers and sisters Elaine Jusczak, Mabel Kohuth, Hazel McClanahan, and Clifford Berglund; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was Thursday, Dec. 15 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. To sign the online register book please visit www.cavallinfuneralhome.com
