Sophomore Luke Fenwick ripped two clean runs at Giants Ridge last week to take his first top 10 finish on the season. Luke finished eighth overall in an eight-team meet with 70+ plus boy racers and was just 1.36 seconds behind fifth place finisher. Thetime separation between first and fifth places was just 1.49 seconds. “When any one of the boys can start approaching the top five skiers in the region—you know they are skiing at a high level. And Luke—he’s just a sophomore; his results were impressive,” said Head Coach Jim Vick.
Molly Rider and Katie Smedstad on the girls’ side had equally impressive runs. Molly finished tied for third place with Katie following Molly in fifth place. Again, when you have skiers in the top five—they are racing with the best. And today, the Alpine Girls had two skiers in the top five in a full field that featured 62 skiers. Signe Larson finished ninth rounding out three Vikings in the top 10.
Collin Berglund, who came off a stellar eighth-place finish last week in Lutsen, finished 17th with Karl Ingebrigtsen 18th. Silver Bay teammate Dexter Yoki was 22nd. Thecombined times of Luke, Collin, Karl and Dexter gave the boys a third-place tie and put them just nine points from second place. Each point is equivalent to a skier’s place.
For example, if each of the top four Viking boys notched up 1-3 places, there’s your secondplace finish. Joe Borud, Kyle Martinson and Charlie Lawler finished 40th, 49th and 50th respectively. Virginia was tough and finished first with 225 points.
The Alpine girls took first place for their second consecutive win of the season. Silver Bay’s Ali Boettcher was the girls’ fourth scorer finishing 20th. A 3-5-9-20 finish order was solid for first place. Duluth East was second in the eight-team field. Ninth grader Megan Lehto followed in 22nd place. Eighth grader Ava McMillan had a top 25 finish in her second round but slipped up in her first run. Rose Ingebrigtsen had the 16th fastest time in the second run, but like Ava, had a course miscue during her first run. While senior Amber Todd experienced some course miscues, she managed stellar headwall runs and found a new level of high-end skiing and will take that forward for the remainder of the season.
The Alpine Vikings will continue a rigorous training schedule during the Christmas break, preparing for its third meet on January 6, 2011 at Giants Ridge. The Moose Mountain Challenge follows on January 13.
