The Cook County/Silver Bay Alpine Vikings came off a successful season and they are already looking forward to next year.

The girls’ team finished fourth in the section behind Mounds View, Hermantown and Duluth East. The girls battled all season long with Hermantown and Duluth East and Hermantown advanced to win the state meet. That alone demonstrates the competition in our own section. Congratulations to Hermantown.

Signe Larson advanced to the state meet as an individual participant and was very pleased with her results. She was 35th after her first run and had 12 skiers within .8 seconds of her time. She opted to push her second run, attempting to overcome the 12 other skiers and hoping for a top 25 finish in the state. She slipped up the second run. But overall, a great season for Signe and the girls’ team. Absent Katie Smedstad, the entire girls team returns next year with great expectations and enthusiasm.

The boys too had a great season, finishing fifth in the field on 18 section teams. The entire team will return next year. Anders Zimmer had a strong showing at Sections and will lead the boys next year. And youth will fuel the boys’ team as well. Seventh-graders Will Lamb and Logan Backstrom recently qualified for the Junior National race in Colorado in March. That’s an outstanding accomplishment.

Junior Signe Larson had an outstanding Alpine ski season. Signe was the only Cook County skier to advance to the state meet. After a great first run, Signe slipped on the second run but still finished and will lead a strong girls' team next year.
