Judy Siegle came before the City of Grand Marais in August, asking the city council to consider a proclamation declaring Sunday, September 21 as International Peace Day in Grand Marais. The council did so, and on September 8, 2014 Mayor Larry Carlson signed the proclamation.
In recognition of the proclamation, Siegle and Kathi Sullivan are hosting an observance of the day. The community is invited to the Grand Marais Recreation Park pavilion on Sunday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m.
There will be singing, of “songs we all know,” said Siegle, as well as drum song of the Grand Portage Stonebridge Singers. There will be readings and candle lighting. “The best symbol yet for peace,” said Siegle.
Siegle encouraged all to come. “If ever we needed peace between ourselves, our country, and the world it is now! Can you remember a time when there was so much dissension, war, suffering and despair as we seem to be in now?
“So how about we in Cook County celebrate a moment of hope and faith on the day designated as International Peace Day? We are doing just that and we hope that you will be able to attend this observance,” said Siegle.
