Alcohol is deemed an essential product by 1 in 3 Minnesotans

A survey conducted by American Addiction Centers revealed that one in three Minnesotans have deemed that alcohol has been an essential purchase during the pandemic.

The survey asked 3,000 people ages 21 and over. Minnesotans came in just slightly lower than the national rate of 37 percent.

Delaware led the nation at 67 percent and South Dakota recorded the lowest rate at nine percent for people expressing alcohol was essential during COVID-19.

One hypothetical survey question asked that given a choice to buy either tissues or alcohol, a quarter of the respondents said they would choose booze.

And further, a second hypothetical question posed, “If liquor sales had been banned in the U.S., would you have broken the rules to purchase some? With 44 percent replying, they would break the rules to buy some hootch.

Men were found to want to use alcohol as a coping mechanism more frequently than women, and 48 percent of respondents said alcohol hindered their relationships during the lockdown. One in five partners admitted that they were hiding their drinking from their partners during the lockdown.
