Thursday, November 11, a strong storm brought wind, rain and some snow to the Northland. Rain fell across Grand Marais for most of Thursday, accumulating about 6 inches. The Cook County Whole Foods Co-op parking was flooded, and rocks and debris were strewn across the Coast Guard parking lot as waves 10-15 feet high crashed against the shore. Winds reached up to 52 miles per hour in the Grand Marais harbor.

Hovland received 4 inches of rain while Tofte was doused with 5.75 inches and Grand Marais drenched with 3.24 inches.

On the Gunflint Trail, it was snow that fell as cold air came down from Canada. Sea Gull Lake received 2.3 inches of the white fluffy stuff and Lutsen, up the hill away from the lake, got 1.2 inches of snow.

While we have had some snow earlier, none of it stuck. The northland has experienced warmer than average temperatures over the last week of October to mid-November. However, the latest snow is expected to stay, and winter has seemingly arrived in time for Thanksgiving.
