Ag inspector budget cut helps reduce levy increase

On Tuesday, December 22, 2009, Cook County Agricultural Inspector/Highway Engineer Shae Kosmalski volunteered $4,000 from her agricultural inspector budget to help the county board keep its 2010 levy increase down.

After an outcry last summer over the possibility of spraying noxious weeds, the county board decided not to spray. Kosmalski said she is anticipating sharing a $50-100,000 grant with numerous other entities for noxious weed abatement. The money would be spent on a coordinator position, public education, and mechanical control.

The county board took Kosmalski up on her offer. The 2010 agricultural inspector budget was reduced from $12,775 to $8,775. The county will increase its levy by 4.7%, although the state would have allowed it to increase by 6.93%.
