Students and staff from the After School Lounge at Cook County Schools joined the Minnesota FoodShare March campaign and collected nearly 300 food items.
More than a dozen students in grades three to six spent some of their afterschool hours learning about and discussing poverty and hunger. They bagged groceries at the food shelf, learned how to cook tasty meals using basic food shelf ingredients, and, thanks to fabric donated by Crystal’s Quilt Shop, made fleece blankets to distribute to food shelf clients.
One of the organizers, Clara Weitz said, “Thank you to everyone in the community who donated.”
The food shelf can always use assistance, so if anyone missed the March campaign, they can still help out. Financial donations are happily accepted and may be mailed to Food Shelf, P.O. Box 95, Grand Marais 55604.
The Cook County Food Shelf is located in the First Congregational Church at Third Ave. W. and Second Street. It is open 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. every Monday. There are also food distribution sites in Grand Portage and at Zoar Lutheran Church in Tofte.
