The Dec. 26 article Undoing Racism — Will it
make a difference?
as well as several earlier articles by members of the same group, seemed to limit its concerns to “soft racism.” Unfortunately, there exists in our society very real, pernicious, government sponsored racism that must be eliminated.
I refer to the various “affirmative action” and similar programs that require hiring, contracting and other activities be conducted in a manner benefiting certain races, ethnicities or gender to the detriment of others. All this is done in the name of correcting some real or imagined wrong done by one group to another, in some cases many generations ago.
When such occurred is irrelevant. There absolutely is no way that treating one group unfairly now can “atone” for, or undo an injustice committed by others in the past. The only people favoring affirmative action programs are those who benefit while others are harmed, those too simple to understand the evil they inflict, or the hustlers among us who stand to gain wealth or political power from supporting their continuance. Such programs were an outgrowth of judicial “interpretations” of the Civil Rights Act, which was crafted specifically to preclude such from happening. The American people have rejected racism, and it is time the government did so as well.
Now that
would make a difference!
