Cook County’s Public Health and Human Services Advisory Council has adopted a resolution to encourage the wearing of protective face coverings in this time of pandemic.
Covid-19 is not simply a disease that I might catch. It is a disease that I might also give. The risk of becoming infected is more than the risk I take for myself. It is the risk I take on behalf of my family, my friends, my co-workers, and all the wider circles of humanity who may be impacted by my actions.
The Advisory Council discussed how we might move the question of wearing masks beyond politics and the right of an individual to make a choice. The science behind mask wearing is now clear. How do we, as a society, make mask wearing a smart choice on behalf of all of us as we strategize to defeat the virus?
The Advisory Council is urging everyone to wear a mask when we’re in public settings where transmission of the virus is a possibility. The Advisory Council is urging our elected officials, and other community leaders, to carefully weigh the best approaches to having a unified standard of mask wearing for all that will help us humans present a unified front against Covid-19.
