Although recent weather has seemed quite summery, fall is just a few days away. Autumn means backto school and the Cook County News- Herald checked in with our local schools for a bit of last minute advice. . Birch Grove Community School
Switching gears from summer to back to school can be a hectic time for families, said Birch Grove Community Education Coordinator Sara Silence.
“Besides the basic back-to-school things, one of the best things parents and community members can do for students is to keep a positive attitude about school.
“Help the children around you get excited about going back to school. Not only for the reason of seeing old friends, but to look forward to the adventures they will have exploring new content and new books alongside their friends.”

The start of school also means the start of programs like the “Reading with Kids” at Oshki Ogimaag Community School. Last year 15 Elders volunteered twice a week to listen to elementary school children read. A few are pictured here at last year’s end of the year celebration.
Great Expectations School Director Peter James said, “Communication is the key. Whether it’s about keeping kids safe, addressing unexpected behavior, challenging students academically, or any other aspect of a child’s experience, a solid relationship between the home and school is founded on good communication and is essential to educational success.”

. Oshki Ogimaag Community School
Carmen Keyport of Oshki Ogimaag shared this back-to-school advice, “Don’t wait too long to establish your routine. For example, the longer you wait to get your children into the habit of going to bed at a set bedtime, the harder the time your children will have getting up for school in the morning. Help your kids get into the routine of going to bed earlier by having them choose their clothes and packing their book bags the night before, as well as installing a tried and true bedtime ritual like reading with them.”

. School District 166
Also stressing the need for communication, Cook County Schools/ISD 166 Principal Adam Nelson said ISD 166 will soon be sharing information via Twitter and an updated Facebook page. He said student news and information will be available there, as well as on the school district website.
Nelson also encouraged everyone to attend the Wednesday, August 31 open house where parents and students—from preschool to seniors—can meet teachers. Information on class supplies will be available there, as well as on the school website.
And, said Nelson, any new families in the community who have not yet enrolled can come to the PK-12th grade office at the main doors to pick up information.
