Adults show they care with pinwheels

It is important to work to prevent child abuse all year long, but extra effort is taken by the Cook County School Community Action Team in April to educate the public about the problem. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. To get people thinking—and talking— about ways to prevent child abuse, the Community Action Team is sponsoring “Pinwheels for Prevention.”

Throughout the month of April, community members will see pinwheels popping up all over the county. Jodi Yuhasey of the Violence Prevention Center explained, “Pinwheels make you smile. They symbolize what childhood should be, a time of hope, health and happiness.”

Pinwheels will be given out to children at local schools and will be available at the Violence Prevention Center, Grand Marais Library, Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and other local businesses for adults who wish to display pinwheels to support Pinwheels for Prevention.

There will also be pinwheel coloring pages at the schools with a space for kids to fill-in-the-blank, “Adults show they care by….”

Student Success Coordinator Anna Sandstrom asked students to fill-in-the-blank and created a touching bookmark from their answers. Each student will get a bookmark to take home in April. Some of the things students listed were, “Bringing me to school. Bringing me hunting. Helping me when I get hurt. Keeping us safe. Smiling at us. Making us macaroni. Teaching us. Playing games. Saying I love you every night.”

So grab a pinwheel and smile. It’s a way to show you care.
