Sometime during the first week of February, I.S.D. 166 athletic/activities director and K-12 assistant principal Mitch Dorr received the good news that a Cook County student had been selected to receive an ExCEL award, believed to be the first ever for a CCHS student.
It was a great honor for the student, for the school and for Mitch and his wife Sharon, because their son Adam Dorr was the recipient of the award.
An independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota selected 18 boys and 18 girls out of 200 nominees.
Juniors picked must be making satisfactory progress toward graduation, participate in Minnesota State High School League fine arts and/or athletic activities; hold leadership positions; and work voluntarily in their communities.
Adam more than meets the criteria listed above. He participates in baseball, basketball, football, band, National Honor Society, honor band, Knowledge Bowl and state history bee. As a volunteer, Adam has amassed more than 400 hours between his work for the Salvation Army, helping with youth basketball, participating as a student aide for teachers and serving his church as a lector and usher.
The award comes from the Minnesota High School League and Wells Fargo.
I.S.D. 166 superintendent Dr. William Crandall said ExCEL stands for “Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership.”
“It is a unique program that is exclusively for Minnesota High School juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities, and who work voluntarily in their community,” he said, while also congratulating Mitch Dorr at the most recent school board meeting.
Each recipient will be recognized by KSTCTV (Channel 45) during the broadcasts of the 2019 winter tournaments.
