Acknowledging Goodell for dedicated service to conservation

For the past 12 years, Don Goodell has diligently given of his time as a Supervisor for the Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD). Don’s background as a geologist has aided in his introspective consideration of conservation projects and programs, asking many great questions and always mindful of the mission of soil and water conservation. Don was chairman of the SWCD Board for most of his service years and his thoroughness and attention to detail were evident and well engaged.

Don’s understanding of our natural resources coupled with his steady leadership were key components in the revision of the Cook County Comprehensive Water Management Plan, as well as during the planning and development process of the One Watershed, One Plan for the Lake Superior North Watershed. These two plan documents are foundational guidance for all SWCD work, laying out priorities and practice goals to achieve.

Don’s ability to work with others in a respectful manner was a valuable attribute while part of the SWCD Board. His organization and thoughtfulness were paramount, as Don was always prepared while taking meticulous notes and his comments and ideas were sought with reverence.

The SWCD Board and staff would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Don, for his shared knowledge, time, steady leadership, and dedication to conservation.

With Don’s absence, there will be an immediate need to fill his vacancy by appointment. The position of SWCD Supervisor is an opportunity for people who are interested in a wide variety of natural resource concerns, including but not limited to water quality, soil erosion, forestry, and stormwater management. Supervisors meet monthly to discuss the business of the SWCD, state grant allocations to landowners, district conservation priorities, coordination with other local units of government and state agencies, and legislative priorities. Supervisors are elected at large to a four-year term. Supervisors do not receive a salary, although they do receive compensation for attending meetings and are reimbursed for expenses.

Those interested in serving as a supervisor should contact the office for more details. This position will be up for general election on November 3, 2020. To appear on the ballot, file at the County Auditor’s office from May 19 to June 2, 2020.
