The North Shore Music Association is thrilled to kick off its 2020 season with a concert by Minnesota’s acclaimed choral group Cantus. Hailed as “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States” (Fanfare), Cantus is known for its trademark warmth and blend, innovative programming, and riveting performances of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. The Washington Post praises the group’s “exalting finesse,” “expressive power,” and “spontaneous grace.” The Philadelphia Inquirer calls Cantus “exquisite.”

In 2020, Cantus celebrates its 25th anniversary with a new program inspired by the celestial skies. Paying tribute to the draw of space exploration, excellence in innovation and technology, and the triumph of the human spirit, One Giant Leap commemorates such awe-inspiring events as humankind’s first steps on the moon. From Edvard Grieg’s “Ave Maris Stella,” depicting heroes in the constellations, to David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” One Giant Leap reflects on how our timeless wonder for the moon and stars has fueled our oldest mysteries and inspired our greatest accomplishments.

Cantus will perform at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts, 51 West 5th St., Grand Marais, on Saturday, January 11 at 7 p.m. Tickets ($25 adults, $10 youth 18 & under) are for sale in advance, no fees, at www.tix.com (search “Arrowhead Center for the Arts”) and at the venue on the night of the show (the box office opens at 6 p.m.). Please call 387-1272 with questions or for help purchasing online tickets.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
