Accident takes life of Marine with ties to Grand Marais




Chris Mark of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a 23-year-old man with ties to Cook County, died in a tragic accident on Sunday, March 3, 2013.

According to Fox News 11 in northeast Wisconsin, the rollover crash occurred in Manitowoc at approximately 2:45 a.m. Police report that four people were traveling northbound in a Cadillac at a high speed and did not stop at a stop sign. The car struck a Chevrolet with three occupants.

Mark was the driver of the Chevrolet. He and one of his passengers, Zachary Gates, 24, of Two Rivers, Wisconsin were pronounced dead at the scene. The third passenger, a 23-year-old man, was flown to a Green Bay hospital with serious injuries.

According to the Fox News 11 report, the Cadillac’s driver, 21-year-old Dylan Karnitz, Manitowoc, was not injured. He was arrested on two counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and four other charges related to alcohol.

The three passengers in the Cadillac were transported to a nearby hospital where they were treated and released.

Manitowoc police are still investigating the crash.

Mark is the son of David and Cherie Anderson, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, grandson of Char Anderson of Grand Marais, and brother to Cook County Commissioner Heidi Doo-Kirk of Grand Marais.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 8, 2013. Chris Mark proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps and his family asks that memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
