Following the biblical discourse presented in letters to the editor presents a constant source of wonder. When I was growing up, one side of my family was Catholic, the other was Jehovah’s Witness… you can imagine where my religious views might have come to rest.
During eight years of parochial school, my best friend was Lutheran. We would have humorous discussions over whose was the “True” religion and which one of us, having been indoctrinated into the wrong religion by our parents, would be unwittingly destined for eternal damnation. College years expanded my knowledge of the science-based workings of our universe and the various religious beliefs held throughout the world.
The debate concerning gay marriage has reminded me of those early childhood “irreligious” discussions. A few frivolous thoughts came to mind, thoughts I’m sure my friend for over 60 years now would enjoy.
I don’t remember that the Bible stated that Adam and Eve were married …certainly there was no passage referring to wedding cake! If in fact Eve was created from Adam’s rib, early genetic diversity was off to a bad start. Cain and Abel apparently had no one to conceive children with other than Eve, further challenging genetic diversity. Since humans are thought to have evolved from apes… perhaps that biblical fatal blow was the result of a dispute by the boys over a particularly attractive one… possibly proving both creation and evolution theories valid?
Why has no one promoted gay marriage on the basis of economic stimulus? Certainly divorce lawyers can see it as a new source of income. Wedding planners, florists, bakeries and caterers obviously must anticipate increased revenue.
Many millions of our species have fought and died over political, religious and personal differences throughout the ages. The struggles for women’s rights and racial equality have yet to be fully realized. By comparison, the acceptance of marriage equity without regard to sexual orientation is still in its infancy. It is doubtful that any of these pursuits will likely be resolved until we can truly call ourselves human.
