AARP tax help available

Local AARP TaxAides will again help members of the community with their federal and state income taxes, and property tax refunds.

While tax preparation volunteers no longer assist with taxes at the Senior Center, every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. they do help with taxes at the Community Centers in Grand Marais and Birch Grove. On Fridays they are at the Community Center in Grand Portage from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

When you come to have your taxes done, preparers ask that you bring all your family’s Social Security cards, W2/ W2G/1099-INT/1099-DIV/1099-R/1099- MISC forms and your Rent Refund Certificates.

People are helped on a first-come firstserve basis. Once tax aides have gotten the information and tax documents, they can tell you when your tax return will be ready, so that you can leave and come back later if you wish.

A TaxAide will check your return for accuracy, after which you will receive a printed copy of your return, which will be e-filed to the government, with your refund arriving in one to four weeks depending upon your choice of direct deposit or mail.
