The AARP TaxAide volunteers will again this year help members of the community with their federal, state, property tax, and rent refund returns, and any other problems people may have had with previous returns.
All of the volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS to help with your tax returns, so you can either paper file the returns or let us e-file the returns for you; e-filing lets you get your refund quicker.
Last year 537 taxpayers of Cook County were helped, with most (98 percent) of their returns being e-filed without the need to mail in paper returns. TaxAides even helped taxpayers with previous year’s returns so they got the refunds they deserved under tax laws.
This public service begins Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Grand Marais Community Center, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Feb. 4 at Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Thursday, Feb. 6 at the Community Center in Grand Portage from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. These weekly dates and times will continue through mid- April, ending after April 15.
Persons should bring their Social Security cards; W2 forms showing employer and income; interest (1099-INT), dividends(1099-DIV or equivalent), and Retirement (1099-R) forms and any other documents sent to you for tax returns (W2-G, 1099-Misc. 1098 etc.); a copy of last year’s federal and state tax returns if you have one; Rent Refund Certificate (see your landlord) or Property Tax Statement for this year; and, if you want direct deposit, a copy of your check or your routing/ account numbers.
The volunteers are looking forward to meeting and helping you with your tax returns.
