I would be less concerned about a box store coming to Grand Marais than I would be about the lack of supper clubs in the area.
We haven’t been home in five years but we’d go to the Devil Track Landing in the afternoon for the local bands and the good steak sandwiches. Same with the Birch Terrace Bar & Grill—bands and food. The Birch is the only nice supper club to survive over the years.
Gone is Paradise Beach, Happy Fisherman, Lucie’s Rustic Inn, East Bay Dining Room, Shoreline, Common Ground, Niolina, and that beautiful one where the motels are down by the lake.
The smaller bars and grills that bit the dust are Sportsmen’s and Mabel’s Café. Also Arrowhead Hotel Bar & Grill, the Bus Depot and Jim’s Hamburgers, and A&W Root Beer stand. I know at our resort here in Florida the state has its big paws in everything. It’s a wonder any cooks can cook – everything has to be in little packages or frozen. We can’t even buy fresh tomatoes from local farmers for our restaurant.
A tourist town has to have good restaurants to survive.
Hope all the businesses have a good summer season.
