Macaroni first appeared in the pages of the Cook County News-Herald in 2010. Then, Macaroni was a champion bed bug detective, a 2 ½-year-old, 34-pound dog, part beagle, part lab and maybe part whippet. “That would make him a ‘wabble’”, said his owner and business partner Walter Penny Jr. who was here visiting his parents.
Walter bought Macaroni from the Florida Canine Academy in Safety Harbor, Florida (in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area), where he was rescued from a shelter, trained, and chosen especially for Walter.
For nine years Walter and Macaroni were Holmes and Watson of the bed-bug world, gaining fame across the Rocky Mountain state for Macaroni’s ability to sniff out bed bugs, working under the business name of Colorado Bed Bug K9.
Today, Macaroni has left the bed bug field behind and assists Walter’s wife as a “Diplo Dog.” Walter’s wife Norma joined the State Department and is a Foreign Service Officer. Below are some pictures of Macaroni provided by Walter.
