A pug’s revenge

Mr. Magoo, my 14-year-old pug, had no trouble adapting to vacation life as Dick and I enjoyed our month in an RV park in the Ozarks.

However, I discovered a side of Magoo I hadn’t seen. He’s a party animal.

The best part of Magoo’s day (not including meal times) was social hour. Each day, towards late afternoon, we humans would haul our lawn chairs from their designated drink-coffee-in-the-morning spots to the evening “socializing” area.

Dogs are always part of our social group, so I brought Mr. Magoo along. Our neighbor’s dog, a beautiful golden and Magoo got along very well. Everybody lavished them with treats like “Frosty Paws,” a frozen delicacy made just for dogs, as well as milk bones. Of course, this setting was Mr. Magoo’s idea of Paradise, and he loved to join the festivities.

He socialized, people petted him, he was in dog heaven, but one afternoon, a dog out on the road attracted Mr. Magoo’s attention, and before I could say lickety-split Magoo was up on the road cavorting with another dog.

“You’re going back to the RV,” I told him and clamping his leash on his collar, I tried to lead him away. He was having none of it. I pushed, pulled and dragged him and finally got him up the stairs and inside. His reproachful eyes followed me as I went out of the door. He was not happy.

An hour later, Dick returned to the RV and came out laughing. He held up an almost empty jar of Fisher’s Salted Peanuts. “Guess what the pug did?”

I knew. Magoo had eaten almost an entire jar of peanuts. As a puppy he’d pulled the same trick, eating a large bag of roasted peanuts I’d purchased at the co-op. I had another thought. “How did he get the jar open and off the table?”

The peanuts had been on the breakfast nook table. We must have left the lid off.

“Don’t know, but the jar was on the floor.” We inspected it. The remaining peanuts were there only because his tongue wasn’t any longer.

“He knocked the jar off the table, and feasted,” I noted

For the second time in my life, I spent the next few days making sure I walked Magoo frequently as his system got rid of the peanuts. Is a pug capable of revenge? I don’t know.
