A partnership to fight hunger

Hunger is a growing problem in the Northland, but a solvable one. Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank is pleased to have a nearly 31-year partnership with the Grand Marais area to feed local residents in need.

As the region’s only “food bank” our primary role is to rescue nationally and regionally donated food, that your community would not otherwise have access to, for nonprofit programs like the Cook County Food Shelf as well as 180 other food shelves, soup kitchens, and other nonprofit programs throughout northeast Minnesota (St. Louis, Carlton, Lake and Cook counties) and Northwest Wisconsin (Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland and Iron counties).

Over the last year we’ve provided nearly 37,000 pounds of our nationally and regionally donated food and grocery product through the Cook County Food Shelf, which is the equivalent 29,600 meals for those in need in the Grand Marais area.

In addition to our service to your local food shelf we also provide direct service to seniors and children in need. Each month as part of our Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS) we provide a monthly commodity food box to income eligible seniors in the Grand Marais area.

And, thanks to a partnership with Cook County Extension and your local public schools we now provide weekend food to kids in need as part of our regional BackPack Program. This direct service results in an additional 10,940 pounds or 8,750 meals for seniors and children in your area.

We are proud to be a Grand Marais area partner providing enough food for over 38,000 meals annually to local residents in need. Thank you for letting us be a part of your local solution to ending hunger!
